Dr Peter Jolly passed away on 3 August, after a battle with leukemia. One could not wish for a better friend and colleague. I met Peter while working at the University of Queensland as a wind energy researcher and technical officer in the 1980s. Peter was a researcher in the use of solar energy for air drying of grain crops, at the University’s Solar Energy Research Centre (SERC). This work followed on from his PhD studies for sorrel drying at the University of the West Indies, in Trinidad, and at the University of Queensland for cassava drying. About 40 percent of final energy use in society is for
these low temperature applications. However, the importance of using solar energy to displace fossil fuels in such applications, and of Peter’s work in this area, is still largely overlooked. His thesis provided improvements in computer modelling and life cycle costing of solar drying systems. He identified one of the key barriers to the uptake of solar energy, which still persists today, subsidised fossil fuel use. Without fossil fuel subsidies, his research showed that solar crop drying was technically and economically viable.

Peter also researched the use of greenhouse covered, prawn farm ponds, to increase aqua-culture production. He recently contributed again to a research group at the University of Queensland on farm greenhouse modelling.

Peter was an active member of the Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society (ANZSES), and was Queensland branch president for some time, chairing the branch working group for the Solar 89 Conference at the University of Queensland. As well, he presented many papers to these conferences over the years.

In 1990, with the demise of SERC, Peter and his young family moved to Singapore to pursue a career as a research engineer with Carrier Air Conditioning and later to China to manage a research centre for the electronics industry. He returned to Australia to work for Highland Pacific on a proposed copper mine in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. As Peter had excellent people skills and could speak Chinese, he was involved in negotiations between the Chinese investors in the project, the PNG government and local indigenous people. Peter’s concern for the local people resulted in the construction of a solar powered teaching facility at the site.

Peter’s interests in energy systems were very diverse. He recognised the environmental and social impacts of our current dependency on fossil fuels and was always up for a discussion around these issues, seeking both technical and socio-political solutions. He sought to counter the myths about solar energy that were propagated by vested interests. One such example was his crucial research paper at the Solar 89 Conference, disproving the myth that solar water heaters and photovoltaic off grid power systems never pay for their embodied energy over their lifetime. He examined the life cycle energy use of these solar systems over a broad range of climate types, from Darwin to Hobart, and showed that even in high latitude, lower solar radiation regions, solar systems generated far more energy over their lifetime than was consumed in their construction.
Peter was always willing to help analyse energy problems. For example, he helped me with a consultancy project assessing energy use for the National Parks and Wildlife Service off grid power systems in Central Queensland and on Moreton Island. He quickly put together a program for life cycle assessment, to allow us to compare solar energy power systems, and energy efficiency improvements to the then wasteful and polluting diesel fuelled, power systems. He also assisted me using the early CSIRO “Cheetah” program1 for analysis of heating and cooling energy consumption in buildings, which I used to help with passive solar design of the Renewable Energy Centre at Ithaca TAFE in Brisbane. Peter will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

2023 – the warmest year on record?

Mid-2023 has marked a significant period in climate change history, characterized by a series of global and regional heat records. According to an article from the Yale Climate Centre republished by Renew Economy, the single warmest day on record globally occurred in July 2023, and the month of June 2023 was also the warmest June in a 45-year dataset. Global sea surface temperatures have reached unprecedented highs, particularly in the North Atlantic, and the Antarctic sea ice has been slower to grow this year, with the extent well below previous record lows.

The primary driver of these heat records is global warming resulting from human activities. Billions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel burning continue to be released into the atmosphere each year, and although the rate of emissions is increasing by “only” around 1% per year, the warming effect will persist until net-zero emissions are achieved.

The oceans store almost 90% of the energy trapped by greenhouse gases, and even a minor shift in oceanic warmth can significantly impact the atmosphere. The global ocean has been storing a larger share of energy since 2020 due to a rare 3-year-long La Niña event, and now that the earth is transitioning to El Niño conditions, additional heat is being transferred from the deep ocean to the surface and the atmosphere. El Niño events have historically led to global temperature records, and it is plausible that 2023 and 2024 could surpass previous records. The accumulation of greenhouse gases will have long-lasting and catastrophic effects on Earth’s climate for centuries or even millennia, and climate scientists highlight the urgency of reducing emissions and implementing strategies to mitigate climate change’s far-reaching consequences.

This is the strongest of corroborations for the urgent need for an updated design climate data set for building energy simulation – outdated climate data will produce inaccurate energy performance estimates and poorly optimised systems. Updates to the data are essential for both the energy efficiency provisions in the NCC Section J approval process and NatHERS as well as for design optimisation and outperformance such as NABERS Energy and Green Star ratings.

Exemplary Energy is filling that void. Full data sets for the era 1990-2022 are available now for all Australian capital cities; and our program aims to complete the data for all NatHERS Climate Zones by the end of August. In parallel with that work, we will be producing latest-15-years Reference Meteorological Years (RMYs) and eXtreme Meteorological Years (XMYs) to represent our current climate.

International Women’s Day, Closing the Gender Pay Gap, and AIRAH’s new CEO


The 8th of March was first marked in 1913[1] as International Women’s Day (IWD), spurred on by the women’s rights movement in the 19th century for gender equality. IWD is celebrated globally in a variety of ways; many countries observe it as a national holiday, while in other countries it is observed socially to celebrate and promote the achievements of women and girls.

The UN Women Australia’s IWD theme for 2023 is ‘Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender equal future’[2], which is aligned with the UN’s broader IWD theme of ‘DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality’. This theme emphasises that innovation is key to achieving a gender equal future, and that access to inclusive digital technologies and education are critical to close the digital gender gap. It aims to recognise and highlight the unique skills and knowledge that women and girls in STEM contribute to technology and online education.

To improve gender equity and address the gender pay gap issue in Australia, the federal government has introduced into parliament the Workplace Gender Equality Amendment (Closing the Gender Pay Gap) Bill 2023. According to Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA), the national gender pay gap in Australia is 14.1%, with Australian women earning $263.90 per week less than men. Under this new bill, the gender pay gaps for employers of 100 workers or more will be reported by the WGEA, and from 2024, anyone will be able to search company-specific gender pay gap data on the WGEA website. The 2024 reports will be based on data reported to 31st March 2023, and employers can also provide a statement outlining their actions to address the gender pay gap to accompany their filings for the public reports.[3] The Gender Pay Gap Bill was referred to the Senate Finance and Public Administration Legislation Committee for inquiry, which is due to report on 16 March 2023 with a view to the Bill passing this month to allow the requirement to apply to large companies for the reporting year ending 31 March 2023 (see the Part 2—Application and transitional provisions in the Bill).

In late February, AIRAH announced the appointment of Trish Hyde as their new Chief Executive. She is the second female to be appointed as AIRAH’s CEO in 20 years, which is welcoming news in time for IWD 2023. We congratulate Trish Hyde on her appointment and wish her success in her new role. Our Executive Director Trevor Lee joined her at the Women of AIRAH (WOA)[4] Sundowner seminar in Sydney on 8 March – a discussion about the coming government policy regarding gender pay gap disclosure, featuring a presentation from the special guest, Rachel Howard (Senior Advisor, 89 Degrees East).

Women in Renewables Luncheon at All-Energy 2022

Notes on the event from Exemplary Energy Intern Jean Tan

All-Energy Australia was held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on 26-27 October 2022, and I was given the opportunity to attend the Women in Renewables Luncheon hosted by the Clean Energy Council (CEC) on the first day of the event. The topic of the luncheon was titled “Sparking change – leveraging innovation to enable the clean energy transition”, and it was a well-attended lunch with over 500 attendees filling up the Goldfield Theatre. The panel of four women was led by Alina Dini, the founder and CEO of Whirl with 15 years of professional experience in the energy, transport and sustainability sectors. The remaining members of the panel were Riley McAuliffe, the business development manager at Jet Charge; Tegan Miller, the Aboriginal Energy Project Officer at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning; and Leah Powell, the area coordinator at Hydro Tasmania.

The panel discussion focussed on the key factors for a successful transition to clean energy, and the audience – which comprised of both women and men – were asked to participate by voting or adding comments at the end of each of the three-part discussion. The main points identified as essential by the panel members were regulatory changes, more diversity on companies, more support for trades people, and recognition of the traditional owners of the land. The panel members also shared their personal experiences working in a male-dominated industry, and we heard practical advice like “knowing when to let go” from Alina Dini who had walked away from Tesla early in her career to go in the direction more in line with her passions.

Finally, the CEO of CEC Kane Thornton announced the 2022 recipients of the Chloe Munro Scholarship for Transformational Leadership, in support of emerging and mid-level women in the energy sector. This scholarship was founded in 2021 in honour of the late Chloe Munro AO, who had a deep commitment to support a systematic approach to Australia’s energy transition. Three “Executive-Ready” recipients will undergo the seven-month development program for middle to senior leaders, and seven recipients will undertake the four-month Leading Edge program for middle to senior leaders.

The Luncheon was a success, and I was grateful for this opportunity to listen to inspirational stories from women involved in renewable energy, carbon abatement and energy management in Australia, and to witness the support for females in this sector.
