This is Coal – Don’t be Afraid, Don’t be Scared

Since 1994, there has been an annual art prize for caricature called the Bald Archy, parodying the much older and more serious and prestigious prize for portraiture, the Archibald Prize based on the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW).  The Bald Archy is now based on the Museum of the Riverina (M°R) in Wagga Wagga NSW since the death in 2019 of its founder, artist Peter Batey OAM.  Each year, finalists are published and offered for sale at the end of the exhibition’s tour.

Exemplary Executive Director, Trevor Lee, has purchased a quickly executed but pertinent one of last year’s for the office: Lesley Fitzpatrick, “This is Coal – Don’t be Afraid, Don’t be Scared”, 2022, reproduced below.
